An ideal recipe for rainy days (it has been a grey summer here in Germany).
This recipe has a special place in my heart! It brings memories of sharing time with my godmother.
I hope you like my recipe!
For it, you’ll need:
500g split green pea
2 liter of water or broth of your preference.
2 Tablespoons butter (can be substituted for oil)
1 cup onion finely chopped
2 garlic cloves minced
1 ½ cups cooked ham diced
1 celery stalks finely chopped
2 cup carrot diced
2 bay leaves
Black pepper freshly ground
Parsley for serving
In a pot over medium heat, add water and peas with the bay leaves, let it cook for 20 minutes. In the meantime, over medium heat in a skillet melt the butter and sauté the onion, about 5 min, add garlic and cook for about one more min.
Now add the ham and sauté, frequently stirring for about 3 minutes.
Add celery and carrots and sauté another 3 minutes.
Take two cups of the water where the peas are being cooked and add it to the vegetable and ham mixtures and let it cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Add the vegetables and ham mixture to the soup. Season with salt and pepper and cook over low heat until the peas are soft, about 25 minutes more. Discard bay leaves.
Serve hot with some chopped parsley on top.
This recipe serves 4, with a pre-time of 10 min and a total cooking time of 1 hour.
